We make decent money and still can't get close to a down payment, because rent climbs exactly as fast as our raises do. I've stopped believing we have a spending problem — I think we have a math problem nobody in charge wants to say out loud. Who actually benefits from keeping it this way, and what would it take to change it?

Every new building going up near us is labeled luxury, and every older one just quietly got more expensive. I'm not against anyone earning a living — I honestly just can't tell who is building the places normal people are supposed to live in.
